Carol Fennell

Born into a farming family in Southern Indiana, Fennell first noticed the patterns and textures of nature at an early age. "The way the first shoots would pop through the soil or the passion of a blooming flower always had me close to the earth." As an undergraduate, Carol studied ceramic sculpture. Her sculptures were large scale and upon graduation, she created a "blue room," a full size bedroom colored in blue-gray. She won scholarships and art awards each of the four years she attended. "I loved the three dimensional quality of clay, but also wanted to work in paint." In graduate school, she shifted her focus to painting, studied under abstract artists, and created large sculptural paintings. "I was torn between the two mediums and it wasn't until recently, I discovered a love of using both the clay and paint." "My most recent work, influenced by the natural beauty that surrounds me, explores the boundaries of the traditional landscape. I look to the textures, shapes, designs and patterns in the earth, and convey what I see onto my clay canvas. I like my work to feel familiar, yet abstract. I do not strive to imitate nature, but to express the beauty and feeling I perceive through our landscape." Each piece is hand built from clay, carved and fired in a kiln. It is then painted in layers with acrylics, metallic rubs or oil dry brush.
