Julie Leidel

Colorado Paintings Inspired by The Arts & Crafts Movement

Julie Leidel is a local Evergreen, Colorado painter who primarily uses gouache in her creations. Julie has been painting for more than 30 years. However, it was only when she discovered the Arts & Crafts Movement that she truly found her artistic voice. Because of this, she easily developed her inspiration for the beautiful Colorado paintings she makes today!

Julie’s artwork evokes a feeling of yesteryear and connects to our memories of the natural beauty that surrounds us. She strives to creatively translate the landscape, architecture, animals, and written word into artwork. WPA National Park posters have inspired much of her Colorado work. She has over 50 paintings from all over the state!

Julie works full time as an artist. She exhibits her work in 16-18 Colorado fine art festivals annually and nationally in CA, OH, NC, and NY.

She currently lives in Evergreen, Colorado.

Julie is a Roycroft Renaissance Artisan specializing in creating revivalist art inspired by the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts Society. She is a member of the Foothills Art Center and Evergreen Artists Association. The Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts Society has inspired her to create beautiful Colorado paintings that everyone can love!

Quote from Julie,

“I really want my artwork to allow people to fall deeply in love with Colorado.  With simplistic and flat shapes of color, my work is a representation of how your memory perceives a time, or a place. Our memories don’t capture every detail, like a camera would. Instead, we get a warm glow of recognition when we have found a connection to nature and a specific chapter of our past. This interpretation allows our own personal experiences to fill in the gaps visually, and leaves room for our own story to be told. I enjoy watching people look through my work with that spark of remembrance, a flood of memories, or a desire to rediscover, go and explore someplace new.”

Painting Process:

“I usually work from photographs for my paintings. Sometimes I can capture it all in one viewpoint. Other times, I will collage multiple images together to bring a deeper sense of what a place really represents. I open up my work artistically by changing seasons, and moving mountains, or taking out visual clutter to better convey the storyline. In using gouache as my medium, this chalky, opaque paint really lends itself to a feeling of yesteryear with its flat, matte finish.

The Evergreen Gallery is proud to represent Julie Leidel and her amazing creations. We have dozens of Julie’s illustrations from all over our beautiful state!
